A few weeks ago I wrote a post about bringing live comedy from markets like New York and Los Angeles to people around the country via the internet.
Apparently, the folks at Screenvision are doing their part to deliver stand-up comedy around the country, but they are doing it through movie theaters. They are releasing a series of movie-events called “Stand-Up 360″. For $15 a ticket, you can go see the film and laugh with comedians from NYC that you might not be able to see, if you live in say…Arkansas.
I’m interested in seeing how successful this will be. There are several companies that are looking to do more with movie theaters than just show movies. They want to create special events that might be better viewed on a large screens. I think this will work in some cases like sports but not in others. Mostly because live event viewing on the internet is going to continue to grow. And as soon as your television and computer are integrated (not if…when), this puts a huge dent in the movie theater event viewing market. Why wouldn’t people watch it at home? For cheaper probably.
From a comedy stand point, I would prefer to have the opportunity to view the comedians live (via the internet) and I would prefer to have the opportunity to choose who I watch. A service like the one I explained previously would allow for this.
Regardless, I hope Screenvision is successful because the more comedy is pushed out to more people, the better.
