Last Comic Standing: Where is the Support for Iliza Shlesinger?

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Photobucket

This season, there are two L.A. comedians still on Last Comic Standing (literally as I type) - Adam Hunter and Iliza Shlesinger. Here is what I find strange - the incredible support Adam Hunter is getting from his fellow comedians and the lack of support Iliza is getting. I am basing this off of the barrage of bulletins, event listings, and e-mails that I’m seeing on Myspace that say “Support Adam Hunter on Last Comic Standing”. Jay Davis, Steve Byrne, Andy Kozel, and some dude named Toogie…among others have all been promoting Adam Hunter via Myspace. I see none of this for Iliza. Why? I want to know why.

Of the comedians left, my choice is Iliza. I have seen her perform close to 10 times in person. I’ve done many write-ups on her performances at Ballgame’s Laugh Lounge and elsewhere.

I guess we’ll see who America thinks is funnier.

Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch: Really?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Variety Magazine came out with a list of 10 Comics to Watch.

I have seen some…I haven’t seen others…so it’s tough to pass judgment on the choices. Here’s what I do know though…I don’t see the comics who I think you should watch.

So here’s the deal…Live Comedy L.A. is going to create its own list of comedians that you should go watch. Why? Because I think there are comedians that are not on that list that will make you scream like a 13 year old girl….that’s why.

Stay tuned for a list of the funniest SOB’s in the City Angels. If you have a vote…kick it my way.

I really enjoy the comedy show Linda Pine produces once a month at Meltdown Comics. It’s one of the most original comedy experiences in Los Angeles. Nerd comedy…sponsored/free beer from Asahi…in a comic book store…cool stuff. I highly recommend checking this one out. Jonah Ray, the host, is always great. It’s a fun Friday night. Hit the Bosanova for dinner and you have an awesome, inexpensive date. I know…pimp right?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

OK folks…big weekend for Los Angeles comedian Ryan Sickler.  First, he is appearing on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham on Friday, July 18th.  The show airs at 10pm on Friday, so set your DVR’s tonight!  Here’s a clip:

Then…he is performing at my 30th birthday on Saturday the 19th at Red Rock on Sunset at 9pm. Watch him on Comedy Central and then come watch him live in a small, intimate setting.  Yeah…you can reach out and touch him…if you want.  The rest of the line-up is awesome…I booked it myself ; ).  Matty “Ballgame” Balaker, Lauri Roggenkamp, Steve Flye, Brian Scolaro, Chris Franjola, and Sickler.  That’s a lot of sexiness in one line-up people.  Can you handle it?

Video: Jeff Short in Sharp Aquos Commercial

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

I mentioned last month that Los Angeles comedian Jeff Short is in a national TV commercial for the Sharp Aquos. Here it is. I want to tell you where Jeff is performing…but he does not have the info available. So I will tell you he is friends with comedian Aisha Tyler…who is smokin’ hot and funny.  Enjoy the commercial and go meet Aisha when it’s done.

Show Recap: Gillearn and Ney Kill Laugh Lounge

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Photobucket

Quick recap on Ballgame’s Laugh Lounge at Red Rock from Tuesday night.

First, it was great to see Brad Stewart from No Name Comics do his first at Ballgame’s. He said the room lived up to the pub I give it on the site, which is good to hear. Brad was very smooth. I plan on hitting up his show at Room 5 this Sunday.

I have to say that the sets of the night go to Jason Gillearn and Patrick Ney. They were both hilarious. Gillearn is so relaxed on stage. The audience just hangs on each word. He’s a top 5 comedian in the city.  Very underrated in the public.  Comedians know how good he is.  I think Ney has honed his act very well. These are definitely two comedians I recommend going to see.

Next Laugh Lounge on July 15 has a killer line-up that includes Shang and Ari Shaffir.

Also, thanks to Matty “Ballgame” for the website mentions at the show.

Ryan Sickler - Dash of Downs

I haven’t heard it in a while…it’s a classic.

Ryan Sickler with Jay Mohr at the Brea Improv

Spotlight: Sebastian.

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Sebastian Maniscalco has been performing stand-up comedy in Los Angeles for years. He’s the classic story of a waiter in Los Angeles trying to make it big by coming up through the ranks of stand-up. Even leaving in the middle of shifts to go do sets and then heading back to work.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform live at the Comedy Store, where he is a regular, on one occasion. He’s absolutely hilarious. His big break recently came with the theatrical release of Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show, where he starred along side fellow Los Angeles comedians Bret Ernst, John Caparulo, and Ahmed Ahmed. Sebastian is doing stand-up full time now and touring the country. His schedule looks pretty packed on his Myspace page but you can definitely catch him at the Hermosa Comedy and Magic Club in September. I also think you can probably catch him at the Comedy Store between road gigs…just call ahead.

In the mean time, Sebastian’s “Comedy Central Presents” special re-airs on the 4th of July at 6:30pm, so set your DVR’s. In the meantime, here is something to wet your appetite:
